Former Oregon Ducks standout Damarcus Simpson sailed through qualifying in the men’s long jump at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials Saturday at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Simpson leaped 26 feet, 3 inches to finish third place in qualifying and advance to Monday’s long jump final.

Despite jumping a personal-best 26-10½ at the 2021 Olympic trials, Simpson finished a hard-luck fourth and just missed out on a spot for the Tokyo Olympics. Now 30, Simpson will look for a little redemption when he’s part of the 12-man final on Monday.

To make Team USA in the long jump, Simpson would need to not only finish in the top three on Monday, but also achieve the Olympic standard of 27-1¾.

Johnny Brackins and Will Williams topped the field in qualifying, with each leaping 26-4¼. Marquis Dendy, Isaac Grimes and Kemonie Briggs rounded out the top six.

All four of the top jumpers Saturday had their best mark on their third and final attempt.

The men’s long jump final is slated to begin at 5:25 p.m. Monday.
