A grease fire that engulfed a food manufacturer in North Portland sent smoke billowing above Interstate 5 just in time for the Monday evening commute.

Portland Fire & Rescue crews were still battling for control over the second-alarm blaze at Shin Shin Foods, 400 N. Thompson St., as of 6 p.m.

Workers at the factory reported a grease fire that quickly spread throughout the building by the time fire crews arrived, said Fire Bureau spokesperson Rick Graves.

“We’ve got a very old building here with cracks in the walls. Roofs are now collapsing, so we’re fearful of a wall or structural collapse,” Graves said. “It’s a very dangerous situation.”

Graves said more than 60 firefighters were taking a defensive approach by sending water through windows or from ladder trucks. Smoke was blowing near the adjacent freeway, snarling traffic. No injuries were immediately reported.

Oregon Department of Transportation spokesperson Don Hamilton said there are no plans to close Interstate 5.

Shin Shin Foods produces a variety of noodle dishes, including spaghetti, chow mein and stir-fry, as well as shortbread cookies, wontons and yogurt cups, according to its website. The company didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
