A 30-year-old Portland man was killed Saturday morning in Clackamas in what officials said was a homicide.

Jefferson Smith Cates died at the Crown Court Apartments on Southeast 97th Avenue, police said. Officials have not released the cause of death.

Clackamas County Sheriff’s deputies responded to an assault call around 12:49 a.m. Multiple people reported they had heard someone calling for help, the sheriff’s office said. One 911 caller said a man was injured.

Deputies arrived to find someone giving first aid to Cates. Deputies took over, but Cates died at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.
