A wildfire in Deschutes County that started Tuesday afternoon has now spread to more than 2,000 acres. The Darlene 3 fire, which led to several evacuation orders in the area, is 30% contained as of Wednesday morning, Central Oregon Fire Management Service spokesperson Kaitlyn Webb said.

The wildfire started around 12:45 p.m. Tuesday a mile south of La Pine on the east side of Darlene Way, according to Central Oregon Fire. Gusty winds fanned the flames to 250 acres by late afternoon, prompting Gov. Tina Kotek to invoke the Emergency Conflagration Act, the Oregon State Fire Marshall reported. The act enables the fire marshall to mobilize additional firefighters and equipment to combat the blaze.

By Tuesday evening, clouds of smoke continued to fill the sky as multiple agencies tried to contain the fire, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office reported in a Facebook post.

Level 3 “go now” and Level 2 “be set” evacuation notices remain in place east of the railroad tracks near Darlene Way and Ice Cave Road and for areas east of U.S. 97, Central Oregon fire officials reported Tuesday evening. The American Red Cross opened a shelter at La Pine High School, the organization reported. An animal shelter is in place at the La Pine Rodeo Grounds.

Multiple campgrounds and trails in the area remain shut down.

A multi-agency incident management team will continue fighting the fire Wednesday morning, according to Central Oregon fire officials.

Just four days earlier, another wildfire broke out west of the Deschutes River, burning more than 1,000 acres. That fire was 50% contained as of Tuesday, Central Oregon Fire reported.
