As our nation gets ready to celebrate its independence later next week, plenty of non-Fourth-of-July options are still available for getting out and about prior to the holiday. Of special note is the 50th anniversary of Saturday Market, a Portland stalwart that’s hosted both locals and tourists for half a century. Get down there, have an elephant ear, and celebrate this downtown tradition. We’ve also got the kickoff of a big chamber music summer festival and the annual Latino Cultural Festival in Hillsboro. “The Beethoven Effect”

Chamber Music Northwest presents a Beethoven-inspired Summer that highlights the music of Ludwig von Beethoven with selections that illuminate how Beethoven’s genius sparked ever-emerging ripple effects in the world of music. The festival boasts more than 70 of the most exceptional chamber musicians from the region and around the world.

This year’s World Beat will put a specific emphasis on the culture of Ukraine. Salem’s Riverfront Park comes alive with the music, dance, food, and traditions of more 70 nations and cultures. The festival kicks off with a Children’s Parade at 9:45 am on Saturday.

Jazz Jam (Newport)

This year’s concert features vocalist Halie Loren and Grammy Award-nominee guitarist Diego Figueiredo. And, it’s not just a concert, there’s whisky tasting, snacks, a live auction and more. All proceeds benefit the annual Oregon Coast Jazz Party

Rose City Cigar & Soul Festival

This one-of-a-kind Portland event aims to bring together cigar enthusiasts and soul music fans for a weekend of live music, cigars, and networking opportunities all held at various venues throughout the city including the rooftop of Bar Palomar on southeast Division Street and Jackie’s on Sandy Boulevard.

Starry Night at Maryhill Museum

Astronomers from the Goldendale Observatory and Rose City Astronomers will bring telescopes and their expertise to this event that promises a great look at galaxies, nebulae, globular clusters and other heavenly bodies. Visitors can also see the museum’s exhibits and take part in educational events. Ticket holders are invited to spend the night on the grounds and will have access to the museum the following morning.

PETE’s “a seagull”

Portland Center Stage welcomes PETE (Portland Experimental Theatre Ensemble) as part of its new community-based model of presenting performances in partnership with local artists and arts companies in the region. The show is the culmination of 10 years of PETE working on new translations of Chekhov plays. The performance involves a group of artists who meet at a country estate and ruminate on their unfulfilled lives.
