The Oregonian/OregonLive took home nine awards in the 2024 Society of Features Journalism contest in results announced Tuesday.

Here is Oregon reporter Samantha Swindler was the big winner with first, second and third place awards, plus one honorable mention.

Swindler won first for visual storytelling in Division 2 for her video on the cranberry harvest in Oregon. She also earned honorable mention in that category for her video on saddlemaker Hamley & Co.

She took second place for general short feature for “Portland’s Robot Alley.”

Swindler came in third in the food writing category for her feature on the Cowboy Dinner Tree restaurant.

Restaurant writer Michael Russell took first place in food writing for his portfolio of stories “about what’s missing in Korean BBQ, the Northern Mexico origins of the flour tortilla and why the Panucho Yucatan dish became a signature dish in Portland.”

Tom Hallman Jr. won first place in narrative storytelling for a single story for “The Principal’s Gift.”

In Division 1, Vickie Connor took second place in visual storytelling for her video on an Oregon sheep farm.

Jamie Hale took second in Division 2 for a portfolio of specialty features, which included Amanda’s Trail, Breitenbush and Yachats.

Reporter Gosia Wozniacka place third in the utility feature category for a portfolio of stories about heat pumps. Kristi Turnquist also took third for arts and entertainment feature for her feature on Ted Smith, KMHD host.
