Blazer Focused: Trail Blazers draft Donovan Clingan, trade for Deni Avdija

The Portland Trail Blazers entered the second day of the NBA draft on Thursday with two second-round picks but ended the day with three future second-round picks and no players after making two trades.

The Blazers traded the No. 34 pick, used to select Marquette guard Tyler Kolek, to the New York Knicks for second-round picks in 2027, 2029, and 2030.

Minutes later, Portland traded the No. 40 pick, used to take Marquette forward Oso Ighodaro, to Oklahoma City for the No. 52 pick.

The No. 40 pick ended up being traded to the Knicks, who sent it to the Phoenix Suns.

Golden State then bought the No. 52 pick from the Blazers, according to reports, in a move that the franchise cannot announce until July 6.

All told, the Blazers ended the day not keeping the players they selected but added three future picks and some cash.

The moves make sense on two fronts.

This wasn’t considered a deep draft, so it was probably wise not to take one, let alone two, fliers in the second round. The Blazers already have several young players in development.

Also, the Blazers, who selected center Donovan Clingan out of Connecticut at No. 7 on Wednesday, have a loaded roster. Adding two more players would mean having to remove two more players.

On Wednesday, the Blazers agreed to a deal that sent guard Malcolm Brogdon and the No. 14 pick in this year’s draft, plus a first-round pick in 2029 and two second-round picks to Washington for forward Deni Avdija.

That deal cannot be announced until July 6.

The Blazers are expected to introduce Clingan on Saturday.
