The wildfire that broke out near La Pine earlier this week has grown to nearly 4,000 acres and spurred continuing evacuation alerts Thursday.

Warm winds and temperatures pushed the Darlene 3 fire to 3,889 acres compared to 2,000 acres Wednesday, according to the Central Oregon Fire Info, a website that compiles updates from firefighting agencies.

The fire started Tuesday about a mile south of La Pine and now has spread into Deschutes National Forest, according to Central Oregon Fire Info.

Authorities have issued various evacuation notices, including Level 3 “go now” for people living on the east side of La Pine. The Red Cross is operating an evacuation shelter at La Pine High School.

The fire remains about 30% contained.

Firefighters spent Wednesday night creating ditches around the fire, and Central Oregon Fire Info said Thursday’s focus was using bulldozers and crews of firefighters to strengthen the perimeter.

As of Thursday, 335 firefighters and responders were working on the fire, along with 38 fire engines, eight water tenders and multiple bulldozers, Central Oregon Fire Info said.
