This weekend’s planned closure of Interstate 5 through a portion of Southwest Portland has drivers from Clark County to Eugene — and beyond — fretting about travel plans.

The Oregon Department of Transportation will shut down I-5 at 9 p.m. Friday, June 28, between the Southwest Terwilliger Boulevard exit and the Capitol Highway overpass mileposts 297 to 295, including several onramps. The closure will start at 9 p.m. Friday, June 28, and continue all hours and days through 5 a.m. Monday, July 1.

ODOT is encouraging north-south travelers to use other freeways including interstates 205, 84, OR 217, and U.S. 26 to get around the four-mile closure.

And Portland Bureau of Transportation officials are encouraging people to treat the closure as they would a weather emergency, completing errands before the freeway shuts down, staying home if they don’t have to get anywhere and reserving the roads for people who must travel.

Here are several routes to get around if you must travel in the vicinity of the closure.

Oregon 43

Oregon 43 may be a good choice for traveling north or south yet staying off the bigger highways. If your goal is I-5 North, taking the Terwilliger turnoff north of downtown Lake Oswego will take you right to I-5 just north of the closure.

Boones Ferry Road

Heading north on I-5, the Lower Boones Ferry Road exit is one of the last places to get off. It’ll likely be busy, but it will get you right to Terwilliger Boulevard, which will put you back on I-5 just beyond the closure.

From Salem

I-5 Northbound can be backed up to Wilsonville or farther on the most average of weekends, so if you’re coming from the valley, you might consider taking a drive through the country and going east or west of the freeway, depending on your destination. Taking River Road north out of Keizer will take you through St. Paul (the rodeo starts Tuesday) and up to Oregon 99W at Newberg. Oregon 99E will take you through Woodburn and Canby up toward Oregon City and Milwaukie.

Barbur Boulevard

The last open off-ramps in both directions empty onto Barbur Boulevard. Consequently, it will be very busy. ODOT says to be ready for long delays.

Interstate 205

Interstates 205 and 84 will likely be popular detour routes, especially with those wanting to bypass Portland altogether on their way north or south.

Oregon 217

Oregon 217 and U.S. 26 are the standard westside I-5 detour, so expect them to be even more crowded than their usual crowded weekend state. Also note that ongoing construction on 217 will further slow traffic.

Capitol Highway

Capitol Highway might be a good option for getting on to I-5 South just south of the closure. Just be aware that if you’re coming from the south, you can’t turn left into the exit at Southwest Barbur Boulevard. You need to turn right on Barbur and then loop around using Southwest Taylor’s Ferry Road. Follow the signs.
