EUGENE — Three current and former Oregon Ducks qualified for the finals in the men’s and women’s 200 meters Friday at the U.S. Olympic trials in track and field.

On the women’s side, former Oregon athlete Jenna Prandini and newly graduated Duck Jadyn Mays are headed to the final after competing in a high-level first heat. And for the men, former Oregon star Kyree King clinched his spot.

Prandini finished second in her heat and eighth overall, posting a season-best time of 22.26 seconds. Mays snuck into the final with a time of 22.33, the third-fastest among runners who did not place top two in their individual heats.

“It was a nail-biter,” Mays said. “I knew the other heats were going to be super fast, so I was really watching the times. I’m glad my time held on.”

It’s a pivotal moment in the 22-year-old Mays’ career, and she admitted she was starstruck sharing a heat with some of the top athletes in the world, including Sha’Carri Richardson.

“It’s really big for me,” Mays said. “It’s my senior year, I’m wrapping up college and seeing what’s going on next. It’s really special for me to make this final. I really wanted to. I wanted to make sure to try and squeeze in there.”

For the men, King (20.25) came out blazing in his heat with the fastest 50- and 100-meter splits before falling behind eventual heat-winner Erriyon Knighton (19.93). Superstar sprinter Noah Lyles had the best time of the day at 19.60, gesturing to his chest at the end of a race as if to say, “Who, me?”

King is locked in for Saturday’s final, he said. And he wanted to get off to a fast start Friday.

“That was my plan the whole time,” King said. “Set the race up early, just cruise and make sure I place. That was it. I was making sure Erriyon (Knighton) didn’t get too far away. I knew he was going to cruise through the round.”

The women’s 200 final is set for 5:27 p.m. Saturday at Hayward Field, while the men will race at 6:49 p.m.
