A rare sight shows empty Interstate 5 lanes near downtown Portland.

Both north- and southbound lanes of Interstate 5 are closed, with Oregon Department of Transportation crews shuttling traffic off the freeway and closing onramps through Southwest Portland.

Shortly after 10 p.m. Friday, ODOT confirm all north- and southbound lanes were closed by contracted crews.

The closure remains in effect from Friday night to an expected reopening by 5 a.m. Monday to allow for work on the Southwest 26th Avenue bridge.

Drivers should expect congestion, especially along Southwest Barbur Boulevard, which provides a local detour. Check traffic cameras before you go and plan for extra time to travel.
