A Clackamas County sheriff’s deputy shot an alleged car thief in a hospital parking lot Friday, June 28, 2024.

A Clackamas County sheriff’s deputy shot an alleged car thief in a hospital parking lot Friday evening after the man started ramming patrol vehicles with the car he had stolen.

Sheriff’s deputies and a Portland Police Bureau unit cornered the man around 6:30 p.m. in the Kaiser Permanente Sunnyside Medical Center’s parking structure after PPB tracked the stolen car into Clackamas County, according to a release from the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday.

Instead of surrendering, the suspect — who was in a stolen white Kia Sportage with two other people — started ramming the officer’s vehicles, the sheriff’s office says.

A deputy responded by shooting the driver, who was driven by ambulance to a hospital in stable condition, sheriff’s officials say. The sheriff’s office said that nobody else was hurt.

The officer who shot the suspect has not been publicly identified, but the deputy was put on paid administrative leave, which the sheriff’s office said is standard procedure.

The incident is being investigated by the Clackamas County Interagency Major Crimes Team along with the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office.
