A driver was going east in the westbound lanes of Interstate 84 near Northeast 162nd Avenue in Portland early Saturday morning.

A driver going the wrong way on Interstate 84 in Northeast Portland hit and killed another driver in the early morning hours on Saturday.

The driver was going east in the westbound lanes of I-84 near Northeast 162nd Avenue when they hit a westbound car head-on at about 1:30 a.m., the Portland Police Bureau said in a statement on Saturday.

First responders took both drivers to the hospital, where the westbound driver died from their injuries, police said.

All lanes of westbound I-84 were closed until about 6:15 a.m. while the Portland Police Bureau Major Crash Team investigated, PPB spokesperson Sgt. Kevin Allen said in an email.

The PPB Traffic Investigations Unit’s traffic reconstruction officer is still investigating the crash.
