The Portland Timbers lift Dairon Asprilla in celebration after they beat Minnesota United 3-2 on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at Providence Park in Portland. It was Asprilla's last match with the Timbers.

A farewell to a club legend. A wave of three unanswered goals. A thrilling home victory.

Dairon Asprilla came on as a second-half substitute in his final match with the Portland Timbers, then provided the game-clinching assist to Jonathan Rodríguez, who slotted in the winner in stoppage time Saturday night at Providence Park.

The Timbers overcame a two-goal deficit to beat Minnesota United 3-2 as the home crowd celebrated Asprilla, the longtime Timbers forward who is leaving the team to join Colombian club Atlético Nacional.

The crowd gave Asprilla a sustained ovation when he entered the game in the 74th minute.

Asprilla has 33 goals and 11 assists in league play across 10 seasons with the Timbers. He also has four goals and four assists in 17 playoff games.

“I have a good opportunity to go back home and be very close to my family,” Asprilla said. “I’ve tried to control my emotions as best as I can through these past days, maybe hide my feelings a little, although the people around me have given me a lot of great words and it’s been great to be around them.”

Portland Timbers coach Phil Neville talks to forward Dairon Asprilla before Asprilla checks into the match as a second-half substitute against Minnesota United on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at Providence Park in Portland. It was Asprilla's last match with the Timbers.

The Colombian known for his bicycle kicks and timely goals is among just four players with 200-plus appearances with the club, joining Diego Chara, Diego Valeri and Darlington Nagbe.

“I say goodbye with my head held high, knowing I gave my best at every moment,” Asprilla said in a farewell note posted Friday on X, formerly Twitter.

Santiago Moreno and Evander also scored for the Timbers (8-7-6, 30 points), who are undefeated in seven consecutive games.

Minnesota (8-7-5, 29 points) got goals from Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Jeong Sang-Bin in the team’s fourth loss in a row.

“I think that the comebacks are now just part of our identity,” coach Phil Neville said.

Hlongwane scored for the Loons in the 29th minute when the ball fell to his feet after Portland goalkeeper James Pantemis dove to push it away from the goal.

Felipe Mora did his best imitation of Asprilla in the 33rd minute, trying for a bicycle-kick goal, but Minnesota keeper Clint Irwin made the save.

Jeong scored another goal in the 38th to put Minnesota up 2-0.

After Mora was shoved in the box, Evander converted on a penalty late in first-half stoppage time to pull Portland within 2-1. It was the Brazilian’s ninth goal of the season.

The Timbers attacked relentlessly in the second half, finally leveling the match on Moreno’s rocket from outside the box in the 73rd minute.

Antony appeared to score the game-winner for Portland in the 88th minute but a video review revealed a handball prior to the goal.

Minnesota midfielder Will Trapp was a late scratch from the lineup after he was injured during warm-ups. He was replaced by Moses Nyeman.

Next up: The Timbers visit FC Dallas at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (MLS Season Pass on Apple TV).
