Throughout the 2023-24 school year, The Oregonian/OregonLive has been running athlete of the year posts to end the season. The posts take a look at the athletes that stood out the most from their peers in their respective sports.
To end the school year, The Oregonian/OregonLive polled readers to see who they think really stood out when all of the sports were put together. Of all of the athletes of the year, who really did the best?
And readers pulled hard for one of the top boys tennis stars the state has ever seen. Lincoln’s Will Semler gained nearly a quarter of the votes by himself.
Semler won his third boys singles state championship this spring with a two-set (7-6(5), 7-6(9)) win over Southridge’s Vitomir Petcov in a match that felt tense from start to finish. He’s only the 13th Oregonian to win three boys singles state championships.
