I have seen a lot of media discussion of Donald Trump’s record of criminal and civil violations and his threat to our democracy. He has been found liable for fraud in a New York civil suit. He was found liable for sexual assault and defamation in the two E. Jean Carroll cases. And he was found guilty on 34 felony counts in his scheme to cover up hush money payments to a woman with whom he had sex, falsifying his business records to keep it out of public view prior to the 2016 presidential election.

Trump continues to face many other charges: 37 felony counts for allegedly mishandling of classified documents from the White House; a racketeering case in Georgia charging him with a conspiracy to steal the 2020 election; and special counsel Jack Smith’s indictment on four federal felonies in connection with his attempt to remain in power after losing the 2020 election. In addition, many states are pressing charges in Trump’s fake electors plot.

Yet these civil and criminal cases are not the root of the current threat to our democracy. Instead, the threat rests with a minority of America’s electorate and their elected representatives who continue to stand behind a profoundly amoral scofflaw. Evidence clearly shows this man is an authoritarian, willing to destroy his supporters’ own democracy.
