Portland police say this is Moyasar Osman Mohamed-Ahmed, a suspect in Thursday night's fatal shooting on a North Portland MAX platform.

The 29-year-old man that Portland police suspect fatally shot another man on a MAX train platform last week is in custody, police reported.

Moyasar Osman Mohamed-Ahmed turned himself in to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office Monday evening, after Portland police, fearing Mohamed-Ahmed might have fled the country, asked for the public’s help in locating him.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting at the train platform at North Interstate Avenue and Prescott Street around 8:30 p.m. last Thursday. They arrived to find Sean K. Smeeden, 39, dead at the scene.

Police on Monday identified Mohamed-Ahmed as a suspect in the shooting and released what appears to be surveillance-camera footage of him on a MAX train platform.

Mohamed-Ahmed had previously been arrested for disorderly conduct and driving under the influence of intoxicants, according to Multnomah County court records. He pleaded guilty or no contest to those charges.

His driver license was suspended for three years after he pled guilty in February to intoxicated driving and recklessly endangering another person, according to court records. Mohamed-Ahmed also has previous arrests in Washington state and Nevada.

Mohamed-Ahmed is being held in the Multnomah County Detention Center and faces one charge of murder in the second degree, according to the police statement.

His arraignment will take place at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Police ask anyone with information about the shooting on the MAX platform to contact Det. William Winters at William.Winters@police.portlandoregon.gov or Det. Calvin Goldring at Calvin.Goldring@police.portlandoregon.gov.
