Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James (23) smiles toward the Memphis Grizzlies bench in the second half of an NBA basketball game Friday, April 12, 2024, in Memphis, Tenn.

LeBron James has agreed to a two-year, $104 million max deal to return to the Los Angeles Lakers, according to a report Wednesday morning from The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

The deal with James will pay him the maximum salary for the 2024-25 season, but includes a player option for the 2025-26 season, giving James control of his future. The deal also includes a no-trade clause.

James agreed to the deal one day after the Lakers signed his son Bronny to a guaranteed rookie deal. The Lakers used their second-round pick (No. 55) to select Bronny in the 2024 NBA draft last week. James’ return to the Lakers give him the opportunity to play with Bronny and become the first father-son duo to play together in NBA history.

James, who will turn 40 on Dec. 30, is considered one of the greatest players to ever play in the NBA. He showed no signs of slowing down last season, averaging 25.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 8.3 assists in 35 minutes per game in the 2023-2024 season.

James led the Lakers to the NBA championship - his fourth overall title - in 2020, but they haven’t reached the NBA Finals since. They were eliminated in the first round of the 2021 and missed the playoffs in 2022. They reached the Western Conference finals in 2023, but were swept by the eventual champion Denver Nuggets. They were eliminated in five games by the Nuggets in the first round in 2024.
