With a potentially record-breaking heat wave in the forecast for the Portland area, the idea of watching a movie filmed on the temperate Oregon coast sounds pretty darned good. Not that fans need much excuse to revisit “The Goonies,” the seemingly forever popular 1985 movie that filmed in Astoria, and other locations along the Oregon coast.
Those who want to see it again, or perhaps have never seen it, will have an opportunity to watch “The Goonies” on Friday, July 5, at the Portland Art Museum’s PAM CUT: Center for an Untold Tomorrow’s Southeast multimedia space, the Tomorrow Theater.
The July 5 screening is the first in a “Blockbuster Weekend” series of movies happening over the July 4 holiday weekend at the Tomorrow Theater. Before “The Goonies” begins, attendees can also, according to the description, “put your blockbuster knowledge to the test with lightning-fast trivia rounds,” with “fabulous prizes” for the winners.
In case you’ve been trapped in a sea cave somewhere and don’t know the plot, “The Goonies” is about a group of kids who live in the “Goon Docks,” and band together to try and save their homes from foreclosure. Their colorful idea about raising money involves consulting a treasure map, and searching for the legendary treasure of a pirate known as One-Eyed Willy. But it turns out the kids aren’t the only ones who want to discover the treasure.
The cast includes Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Martha Plimpton, Ke Huy Quan, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green and Jeff Cohen.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m., Friday, July 5, with trivia at 7 p.m., and the film screening at 7:45 p.m. Tickets are $5. The Tomorrow Theater is at 3530 S.E. Division St.
