Residents cool off at the new dock that opened last week on the Willamette River at Cathedral Park under the St. Johns Bridge.

Temperatures in Portland hit 91 degrees on July 4 and will heat up even more Friday and through the weekend. It’s likely hot temps will stick around into the beginning of next week.

The National Weather Service says temp will be slow to cool each evening through the weekend, especially in urban areas.

The coast is the place to be this weekend if you want to escape the hot weather. Beaches and shore towns will enjoy afternoon sea breezes with highs that stay mostly in the low-to-high 70s.

Most inland valley areas will be dealing with high temps from 100-105 from Friday afternoon through Monday, according to the weather service.

Portland is expected to reach 99 degrees Friday which would beat the old daily record of 98 degrees set just last year on July 5, 2023.

Saturday’s high temps should reach about 101 which bests the old daily record of 97 set in 1960.

Sunday’s old record of 95 set in 2010 doesn’t stand a chance as Portland is supposed to heat up to 103.

Although the highest temps in the forecast have cooled slightly from forecasts delivered earlier in the week, the biggest issue in this heat wave is the lack of overnight cooling. Cooler temperatures for several hours during the early morning before sunrise can help residents sleep better and recover from hot days. But currently, models are showing a 30-50% chance of low temps not able to dip below 70 degrees Saturday, Sunday and Monday night. Those chances are even less in urban areas where the heat-island effect keeps temps warmer.

Extended forecasts are showing the heat lasting at least into the first part of next week. Portland will see another sunny and hot day Monday with highs near 102. And yes, that will also beat the daily record of 98 degrees set in 1952. Some models are showing some degree of cooling with the return of weak onshore flow by midweek. But it’s likely temps will still be above average into Wednesday.
