Financial influencers argue that paying people fairly is the key to ending wage gaps, advocating by sharing powerful tools and money resources for people to tap into.

The wage gap will typically cost a Black woman working full-time nearly $900,000 over a lifetime, according to The National Women’s Law Center.

When workplaces mistreat and undervalue employees, they also underpay them. Over time, those pay discrepancies widen, especially for women, people of color and the LGBTQ+ community.

Today, July 9, is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, aimed to raise awareness that the wage gap for Black women compared to non-Hispanic white men is 66 cents for every dollar paid, according to the American Association of University Women.

This gap continues to widen year after year, impacting how Black women financially support themselves, family and future goals. With more than 80% of Black mothers as the sole breadwinner, co-breadwinners or primary breadwinner for their households, an inequitable salary affects the financial well being of a whole household.

Fair wages, a culturally competent workplace, robust benefits packages and promotions are all ways employers can work to end the wage gap and ensure Black women are paid fairly for their labor.
