Baby Oregon City camel Magdalene and her outdoor air conditioner.

Camels may be historically good with heat, but Oregon’s heat wave is too much for one local camel.

Magdalene, a nearly two-month-old dromedary camel in Oregon City, has been keeping cool with an “outdoor air conditioner” according to her owner, Kim Dilworth.

As the temperatures stay in the high 90s and low 100s, little Magdalene has made herself comfortable in the cool stream of air directed at her pen.

“She loves her outdoor air conditioner,” Dilworth said, “and has been parked in front of it unless I come with her bottle.”

Magdalene lives on The Dilworth Farm along with sheep, miniature donkeys, miniature pigs and a white Pyrenees. The Dilworth Farm is home to “the Bible Zoo,” where animals are raised for live Nativity displays. They also bring school kids to the farm to learn about the animals, Dilworth said.

This isn’t the first time the Dilworths’ camels have been in the news. In 2010, a different camel, this one named Moses, got stuck in a sinkhole and was rescued by Clackamas County firefighters.

It was a happy ending for Moses, who made it out of the sinkhole after many hours without any major injuries.

Magdalene will have plenty of opportunities to enjoy her outdoor air conditioner on Tuesday. The high temperatures in Oregon City are expected to reach 105 degrees by the afternoon.
