Portland police on Tuesday identified the man fatally shot on a troubled city block anchored by a Northeast Portland motel as 25-year-old Donte E. Mathis.

On Saturday, Mathis became the sixth person to die in a shooting in the vicinity of the Madison Suites motel on Northeast 82nd Avenue since August 2021.

The Oregonian/OregonLive chronicled the violence surrounding Madison Suites in July 2022 after four nearby homicides at that time, dubbing the 8200 block of Northeast Milton adjacent to the motel Portland’s “deadliest.”

Mathis’s death marked the 37th of 38 suspected homicides in Portland so far this year. At this time last year, when the overall number of homicides had fallen from record highs set in 2021 and 2022, Portland had recorded 46 homicides.
