So far this summer, Property Watch has been out toward Mount Hood a few times already, first for an eclectic cordwood cabin along the river, then for a luxe lodge once featured on a Netflix show about posh rentals. We couldn’t resist one more trip—this time for a lovely little A-frame cabin in Rhododendron, once profiled in our very own pages.

First of all, the cabin couldn’t be better situated, adjacent to the Mt. Hood National Forest and its 1,000 miles of trails, blocks from Zig Zag River access, and within walking distance to the Skyway Bar & Grill. Completely remodeled by the previous owners, the interior maintains much of its midcentury charm—it was built in 1963—thanks to the preservation of the chunky stone fireplace at the center of the main floor plan, and the exposed wood framing and wallboards.

The living room advantages the fireplace, as well at the front windows stacked up to the ceiling peak. On the other side of the chimney, there’s a modern kitchen with glossy gray cabinets, wood counters, open shelves, and a streamlined dining room. The latter comes complete with the modern (like those Eames dining chairs) and the traditional (a cute freestanding stove in the corner). Note that the sale includes all of the furniture.

The bedrooms are separated by open slat screens, as well as a set of stairs. The first bedroom is at the top of the main spiral staircase. Stairs then lead to a cozy, window-filled landing, perfect for reading, or, with a cup of tea in hand, watching snow fall. A third, short flight of stairs leads to the second bedroom tucked into the cozy nook formed by the distinct roofline.

New mini-split units ensure the cabin can be used year-round, no matter if summer hiking or winter skiing is the preferred activity, and a backyard firepit and hot tub are bonus spots to hang out and relax post-trail.

A-frame houses first gained popularity after World War II—they were an affordable option for owning a second home, especially when sold as prefab kits. These days, they’re Instagram’s favorite house. Whether you want one for your own personal wilderness outpost, or plan to share it as a short-term rental, this one has all the design and comfort cred for either option. Plus, the price just dropped to $619,000.
