A cyclist rides along Leif Erikson Drive in Portland's Forest Park. The old road serves as one of the main hiking and cycling trails in the park.

Portland’s reputation has shifted over the last several years from jokes about putting birds on things, to world-class beer options, to the entire city being on fire.

But there are several parts of the city’s lore and charm that haven’t changed.

Recently, Reddit user elspiderdedisco posed the question: “What does Portland do better than anyone else?” and those in the Reddit thread were quick to respond with what they believe Portland still has to offer that no one else can quite match.

The answer with the most upvotes had to deal with Portland’s outdoorsy areas.

It is true there is a variety of nature settings to enjoy within reasonable driving distance. You can get to the Oregon Coast in a little over an hour. You can get to Mount Hood in a similar timeframe. Both offer different, but amazing outdoor experiences.

The second answer in the thread talks about the variety of styles in different neighborhoods, highlighting cute houses and amazing gardens.

Pick a quadrant around Portland and you are bound to find a unique neighborhood filled with personality.

One Redditor mentioned Portland’s gluten-free food options while another chimed in about the vegan food scene.

Most restaurants around town offer both options, so our list of best restaurants should work for those with dietary restrictions. But we do have some fabulous vegan spots as well.

That person also mentioned cannabis which has been legal here since 2014.

Portland summers were also highlighted, along with the number of swimming locations, outdoor restaurant patios and such to enjoy when the weather is nice.

And of course, one person cited Portland’s strip clubs. At one point, Portland was known as having the most strip clubs per capita in the United States. Not real sure that is still true, but one can choose to believe!
