Portland kicked off August on Thursday with a new daily high temp record of 99 degrees. The former record was 98, set in 2015.

Temperature should cool at least a handful of degrees Friday as southerly winds have brought a modest push of marine air and clouds into the Willamette Valley, according to the National Weather Service. Clouds will be heaviest in the southern and central portions of the Willamette Valley.

Portland will start Friday with morning clouds, then gradually see clearing to mostly sunny skies. The high will be about 89 degrees.

The Oregon Cascades, especially in the central and southern portions, have a 10-20% chance of thunderstorms beginning Friday night and continuing through Saturday afternoon. Those recreating in the mountains should have a plan to seek safe shelter when thunder roars.

Portland’s weekend is looking mixed with mostly cloudy skies on Saturday. The high will be around 85 degrees, which is about average in early August.

More sunshine will help Sunday be a warmer day with light winds, and temps reaching near 90 degrees.

The weather service says similar conditions are expected on Monday with some weak cloud cover early and mostly sunny skies by the afternoon. The high should be about 88 degrees.

Extended forecasts are hinting at average weather Tuesday and Wednesday with some morning clouds and highs in the upper 80s.
