An officer from the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office makes a traffic stop Friday night during a multiagency effort to curb a street racing and takeover event in the Portland area this weekend.

Two people died and a third was seriously injured Friday night in Northeast Portland when a driver was fleeing a traffic stop during a street racing and takeover event. Seven people were arrested, and 50 traffic stops were made, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

Law enforcement personnel from Portland, Gresham, Vancouver, Multnomah and Clackamas counties, the Port of Portland and the Oregon State Police are out in force this weekend in a regionwide mission to curb the street racing and takeover event that has been called the West Coast Invitational. Last year, it drew as many as 1,000 people, police arrested four people and a motorcyclist died in a crash.

At 11:55 p.m. Friday night, two Gresham officers saw a speeding car near Northeast 122nd Avenue and Hancock Street and initiated a traffic stop. The driver did not stop and police pursued the vehicle.

At 11:57 p.m., the vehicle rolled over after crashing into a utility pole at Northeast 122nd Avenue and Marx Street, according to a news release from Portland police. Two people died at the scene and a third was taken to a hospital.

Police said the multi-agency effort to deter street racing and takeovers was successful Friday night with limited racing and no street takeovers that police are unaware of. Officers made 50 traffic stops, arrested seven people, towed four vehicles and issued 11 citations.

At about 10:50 p.m., a speeding motorcyclist eluded police attempting to stop him and ran into a house in the 700 block of Northeast 160th Avenue. Officers obtained a warrant to enter the home and the suspect climbed onto the roof in an attempt to get away. He surrendered when he realized he couldn’t escape, police said in a news release. He was arrested at 3:02 a.m. and the motorcycle was seized.
